RICHMOND. BC – On August 1, Rachel Meloche will become executive director of the Steveston Historical Society. Meloche will succeed Sarah Glen, who was appointed as the Society’s first executive director in 2015.

“Sarah was our first ED and has exceeded our expectations!” Says Linda Barnes, Chair of the Steveston Historical Society Board of Directors. “Under her stewardship, programs such as the successful Walking Tour Vignettes and Songs in the Snow, have cemented partnerships with many groups. Her enthusiasm, professionalism and imagination have been tremendous assets – she will be missed but we look forward to keeping her on as a volunteer.”

Meloche brings a great passion for history, especially Steveston’s, to the role – she draws upon her experience at local heritage sites: Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site, Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site, and the Steveston Museum.

“I’m very excited to be joining the SHS.” Says Rachel Meloche. “Steveston has such a unique and important history, and I can’t wait to work with the Board of Directors and the rest of the SHS team, as well as other local organizations, as we preserve and present its story. We have some great programming coming up, and I’m thrilled to be carrying on Sarah’s excellent work.”

As part of this exciting time of transition, the SHS Board is seeking new general members as well as possible Board recruits. Become a member, make new friends and help keep Steveston a wonderful place to live. Check the membership section of this website or contact info@historicsteveston.ca for more information.

Step into Steveston’s Past as History Comes to Life with the Return of Walking Tour Vignettes

Steveston Alive! Walking Tour Vignettes

Richmond, BC – Stroll through historic Steveston Village as the past comes to life with the Steveston Alive! Walking Tour Vignettes. Not just any ordinary walking tour – visitors will discover what the past was like as talented Hugh McRoberts Secondary School drama student actors perform five short plays about living and working in Steveston in the year 1917.

The Steveston Historical Society and the Steveston Museum are excited to present the Walking Tour Vignettes, now in its second year. This tour offers visitors an engaging taste of history while allowing student actors to showcase their acting skills.

“We’re delighted to be bringing these entertaining and informative stories back to the streets of Steveston this year. Tours sold out last summer, so be sure to catch this unique show while you can!” commented Linda Barnes, the Chair of the Steveston Historical Society.

Leaving from the Steveston Museum and Visitor Centre (3811 Moncton Street), a costumed guide will lead you through the streets of historic Steveston to view each performance. Tours will be offered on Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. in June and July. The walks are about 60 minutes long and will cover just over one kilometre in length.

Tickets are $10.00. Children under 12 are free when accompanied by a paying adult (maximum two children per adult). Please book in advance, as spaces are limited; tickets are available online (click here to purchase).

The Steveston Alive! Walking Tour Vignettes program is made possible through the generous support of the G&F Financial Group Foundation and the City of Richmond. A special thanks to Hugh McRoberts Secondary School for their continued involvement in this initiative.
