Margot D’souza, Marilyn Piccinin and Donna Gregory Wood are three talented friends who will be sharing Pop-Up Art space alongside Jenifer Gustavsen at the Steveston Museum and Post Office for the month of August.

Jenifer Gustavsen – In her first ever art show, we are pleased to welcome Jenifer Gustavsen as one of our Pop-Up Artists for the month of August. Jenifer has a long history with marking art primarily as a classic animator (hand drawn animation), with film credits including Dreamworks films such as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Road to Eldorado, and Sinbad, Legend of the Seven Seas. She has a master’s degree in archaeology and majored in art from a variety of cultures. Jenifer’s research into the brain’s response to making realistic art drove her to try her hand at oil painting and the results are absolutely stunning. Instagram at @ars_oilpainting.

Margot D’souza is a local artist, Steveston resident for over 48 years and member of the Richmond Artists Guild, Richmond Arts Coalition and Men in Hats Plein Air painters. She has a passion for drawing, oil painting and photography and gets her inspiration from photos or sketches made while traveling the world and being in nature.

Marilyn Piccinin, also a Richmond resident, has been painting for a long time, and started with “tole painting” – a decorative form of painting in oil or acrylic. Marilyn now prefers watercolour and paints and paints weekly with a group of local artists.

Donna Gregory Wood has called Steveston home for over 30 years. Since retiring from Children’s Hospital she spends most of her time exploring the outdoors, especially walks at Garry Point, Britannia Shipyards and the West Dyke. She discovered bird photography after receiving a camera as a gift and now has an immense passion for birds – learning about them, photographing them and even painting bird portraits using oil and acrylics. Steveston Historical Society is grateful to Josef Bauer for the donation of this beautiful stone lantern. As Joe was born in the Japanese Hospital it is reminder of a life begun and ended in Steveston – with so much living, adventure and community service in Steveston and the wider fishing and environmental communities in between! The lantern was brought from Joe’s family home on Broadway St. where he lived.

Jaime Gusto of the Steveston Harbour Authority had this to say about Joe:

“He has been a prominent, impactful figure in the BC fishing industry for many decades. Joe Bauer served on the Steveston Harbour Authority’s (SHA) Board of Directors for 2 terms as the Community Groups representative. During his tenure, he worked hard to help promote Steveston Harbour as well as the BC fishing industry and helped foster positive relationships between SHA and its various stakeholders throughout the community. As someone who always advocated that best practices be followed by all fishers, Joe was instrumental in helping SHA develop comprehensive environmental policies for all harbour users to follow. Joe also provided valuable input into developing SHA’s public fish sales float policy, which SHA still employs to this day at the Fisherman’s Wharf, which is a major local attraction. Josef Georg Bauer is a man who has spent much of his life educating people and making his community a better place for everyone.”

Summer is heating up as we welcome our July pop-up artists Ann Eynon and Bonita Ruttkay.

Ann Eynon’s style brings a flavour of traditional Quebecois folk art to her West Coast subject matter. Using broad, impressionistic brush strikes, her paintings are full of movement and have a deep understanding of the interplay of light and colour. She draws inspiration from the buildings and landscapes that surround her from France, to the Gulf Islands and recreates them in acrylic on canvas.

Bonita Ruttkay’s paintings are mainly local Steveston scenes of iconic buildings, gardens and landscapes that were all started during her “en plein air” excursions. “I truly enjoy and am inspired by painting on location. There is something about feeling part of the flow of life around me that carries over into the painting”. Bonita has shown paintings at Richmond City Hall, Minoru Cultural Centre, Gateway Theatre and Richmond Art Gallery.

A percentage of all sales go towards Steveston Historical Society programs and events that support our community.
